Enel begins 154 MW wind farm in Greece

Enel Green Power Hellas (EGPH) has started the construction of 154MW Kafireas wind farm in Greece, with an investment of €300m.

Considered to the largest wind farm in the country, the Kafireas wind farm is located on the island of Evia and is expected to generate about 483GWh of electricity per year.

The energy produced by the wind farm is equivalent to satisfy the electricity needs of 129,000 Greek households.

Operations of the wind farm are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2019 and the power generation will be supported by a 20 year power purchase agreement with the Hellenic Electricity Market Operator LAGIE.

According to the Italian energy company, the power generated from the wind farm will be supplied using 150kV high voltage interconnection lines to the mainland consisting of overhead, submarine and underground cables.

When operational, the wind farm could avoid emissions of about 433,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Enel Green Power head Antonio Cammisecra said: “The start of construction of Kafireas marks a new step for Enel’s presence in Greece, where we have a decade-long experience in the renewables sector.

“With this new facility we are not only committed to providing green and sustainable energy to the country, but also promoting the social and economic development of local communities by adopting the creating shared value approach for the construction and operation of this wind complex.”

Presently, EGPH operates two wind farms, the 7.5MW Iliolousti I and the 9 MW Iliolousti II, located in the municipality of Karistos.

Totally, it has a portfolio of about 308MW of installed capacity from hydro, wind and solar power in Greece.

Recently, Enel inaugurated a 150MW solar plant in the state of Minnesota, US. The solar plant will produce enough electricity, equivalent for 17,000 US households, while avoiding 150,000 tonnes of CO2 emsissions per year.
