US concentrated solar power firm SolarReserve Llc wants to install 800 MW with energy storage technology in Chile in the next years, Chilean daily El Mercurio said today, quoting managers of the company.
The first solar energy project, Copiapo Solar of 260 MW, includes two concentrated solar power towers and a photovoltaic (PV) plant estimated at a total USD 2 billion (EUR 1.69bn).
SolarReserve is in talks to sell a large part of the output to mining companies, seeking to negotiate a contract this year. The facility could thus start operation in 2019.
The company presented Copiapo Solar to the environmental authorities in October 2014 and expects approval in three months. The facility will produce some 1,700 GWh a year in the northern Atacama region, according to the environmental impact declaration.
