Africa: the Future of Renewable Energy

Africa has a huge and largely untapped potential for renewable energy development, and Enel Green Power is building six plants in South Africa, as well as studying the possibility of participating in further public tenders.

With a wide availability of renewable energy sources, growing economies, a rapidly expanding electricity demand and limited electrification in rural areas, Africa has a huge, largely untapped, potential for renewable energy development, with South Africa the market where the greatest growth is expected to take place. It has a population of 50 million inhabitants and its economy accounts for 20 percent of African GDP, while in 2012 energy demand in the country reached 230 terrawatt-hours.
