Wind energy in Ethiopia: Approval for a major wind farm

The Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation Board approved the start of construction for the first phase of the Aysha I wind farm project in the Somali Regional State. Construction of this project, split into three phases, will begin soon.

The first phase will be carried out by the Chinese Company, Dongfang Wind, and is expected to produce 120MW of energy on completion.

The second stage of the project will go to a yet unnamed company backed by the European Investment Bank. It too will produce 120MW.

The third stage, for 60MWs, will be built by the state-owned Metal and Engineering Corporation together with a Chinese company. In all the three stages will produce 300MW, but there are also further plans for further expansion.
