Wind energy in Cyprus

Renewable energy in Cyprus. End of 2011, wind farms in operation in Cyprus contributed about 3.5 percent of national electricity consumption, said Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Praxoula Antoniadou.

Since 2008, have been licensed wind farm plats with a capacity of 165 megawatts in seven regions in Cyprus and currently there are 72 wind turbines with a total capacity of 133.5 megawatts in operation, said Antoniadou.

The minister said at the opening of a wind farm in the eastern district of Larnaca, which until late 2011 the wind farms operating in the island had contributed about 3.5 percent of national electricity consumption and is expected that this percentage increase later this year with more wind farms.

He said that Cyprus has been implementing a policy to increase the contribution of renewable energy. Antoniadou said the government is working to promote the participation of entrepreneurs in the field of renewable energy.

Antoniadou said that Cyprus seeks to increase the contribution of renewable energy to 13 percent of the energy balance for 2020.
