RES Canada Awarded Contract for Alberta Wind Power Project

Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc. (RES Canada), a leader in the development and construction of renewable energy projects in Canada, has been awarded the Balance of Plant (BOP) construction contract for the 150 megawatt (MW) Halkirk Wind Energy Project (Halkirk), the largest wind farm currently under construction in Alberta.

RES Canada was chosen by the project’s developer and owner, Capital Power LP (CPLP), a subsidiary of Edmonton based Capital Power Corporation to be the BOP construction contractor.

"With the construction mobilization of Halkirk, RES Canada marks its entrance into the Alberta renewable energy market. This will be our first wind construction project in Western Canada as we continue to extend our green footprint," said Jason Zingerman, VP of Construction. "This project will mark our first for Capital Power. We look forward to establishing a strong professional relationship with the company and working together in the future."

The project is located in central Alberta, near the town of Halkirk, 122 kilometres east of Red Deer. The project will be comprised of 83 V90 1.8 Vestas turbines. Once completed, Halkirk will have the potential to generate enough electricity power to approximately 50,000 average Alberta homes.

"The Halkirk Wind Project is Capital Power’s first major wind energy project in Alberta and is aligned with our disciplined growth strategy," said Darcy Trufyn, Senior Vice President of Construction and Engineering for Capital Power. "The expected completion date is the fourth quarter of 2012, and the project is one of four wind power facilities that we currently have under construction or in development in Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta."
