Wind energy in Sri Lanka: new wind farm (10 MW)

Sri Lanka’s Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka during an observation tour of the Wind Power Plant in Puttalam recently revealed that another 10 megawatts of wind turbines will be added to the National Power grid on July 10th.

The Minister has said the government will develop the wind power as an energy source to meet the country’s requirement, especially to supply power to many remote villages. Already 20 wind energy plants have been established and five more are being built, the Minister has said.

The government plans to transform Kalpitiya of Northwestern coast into a wind power generating zone. The Minister has said that plans to make use of wind power, solar power, and biogas as alternative energy sources have been mooted.
