Italy has installed over 1,100 MW of wind power in 2009

There was a significant growth of wind power in Italy in 2009. Over 1,100 MW have been installed over this past year, increasing the total wind installed capacity in this country to 4,850 MW.

A statement by the main wind associations states that the additional capacity’s growth rate (+ 30% compared to 2008) is consistent with the increase of the last years, notwithstanding the international economic downturn suffered in 2009, which caused a general deceleration of energy investments.

Due to this performance, Italy again ranks 3rd. in Europe and 6th. worldwide in terms of installed wind energy capacity.

In terms of production, wind generation achieved 6,7 billion kWh in 2009, equivalent to almost 2.1% of the country’s electricity consumption.

Wind energy associations emphasize with pleasure that there is an encouraging wind power scenario in Italy (even if the sector’s regulatory frame has not yet been completed), thus making a valid contribution towards emissions reduction, growth of renewable generation, job increase as well as industrial and economic development in this country.

The wind power potential of actual deployment in Italy has been estimated in over 16,000 MW.
