Petroleum depletion and environment pollution will cause petroleum to be replaced by new energy for automobiles. This will promote a technological revolution in the auto industry. Lithium-ion storage batteries have been the main power supply for mobiles, laptops and digital electronic products since the commercialization of lithium-ion batteries by Sony in 1991. Two types — 6Ah-144Wh/kg and 10Ah-158Wh/kg have been released. United States Department of Energy (USDOE) has supported the R&D of three-generation lithium-ion storage batteries. SAFT of France has already developed two types of high-power lithium-ion batteries, with power mass ratio of l500W/kg and 350W/kg respectively.

Power lithium-ion batteries arouse wide concern in recent years. They are widely applied in the fields of electric tools and electric toys. There are also potential prospects for lithium-ion batteries in the fields of EV/HEV, electric canoe, electric bicycle, etc.

There are a large number of enterprises in Chinese lithium-ion battery industry. However, only a few are large-scale ones with high-level technology and equipment. Fewer have advanced innovation capacity.

From 2006 to 2008, there was high enthusiasm for Chinese enterprises’ to invest in power lithium-ion battery. Due to the delayed domestic electric auto industry, most enterprises focused the investment on electric tools, electric toys and electric bicycles. Encouraged by a series of policies about new energy vehicles in 2008 and 2009, new investment on the power lithium-ion industry will be launched. Power lithium-ion batteries are recognized as developing products. It is unrealistic for large-scale application in a short time. In the mid-long term (5-10 years), prospects of power lithium-ion batteries would be considerably optimistic.
