Italy’s photovoltaic solar power capacity rises to 32 GW

Italy’s solar PV capacity increased by 1.7 gigawatts (GW) in the first quarter to 32 GW thanks to an increase in the development of large projects, the country’s photovoltaic sector association reported on Monday.

Energy from new solar projects with a size of more than 1 megawatt (MW) each increased by 373% in the quarter to the end of March compared to the same period last year.

Medium-sized photovoltaic projects on the roofs of commercial and industrial buildings also increased by 106% in total power compared to last year, Italia Solare said, adding that the development of smaller projects slowed.

Through 2023, Italy’s energy transition has relied on the development of myriad rooftop solar panels, something that has kept power generation costs high in the country and also created risks to the country’s decarbonization path. .
