India: Villagers prefer solar power

Solar power has come to the rescue of villagers of Pandikudi in Periyalur village panchayat near Aranthangi. Realising the uses and advantages of this non-conventional energy, they made a forceful plea with the district administration to repair and maintain a solar power operated street-light.

During the course of inspection of solar lamps set up in the panchayat by Collector S. Ganesh on Wednesday, they informed him that the solar light set up under the MLA Constituency Area Development Fund at an estimate of Rs.32,200 was found to be more efficient. They brought to his notice another solar lamp which has been in disuse for want of a battery for the past several months.

The Collector immediately ordered officials to provide a new battery to the solar street light. He directed the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage officials to ensure prompt supply of drinking water to the village. Later, accompanied by officials, he inspected the primary health centre at Kotthamangalam village and the e-service centre at Iluppur.
