More British wind turbines online

RWE Innogy opened its 16 wind turbines $73 million Goole Fields 1 Wind Farm in Yorkshire. The company said the wind farm will be able to meet the energy demands of 18,200 average households per year.

“Goole Fields Wind Farm … will create a cleaner energy legacy for the area by generating home grown electricity from the wind for thousands of homes,” Project Manager Tim Daldry said in a Thursday statement.

Though coal still dominates the British power sector, the country is emerging as a wind energy leader, and is the world leader in offshore wind installations.

The U.K. Green Investment Bank in March acquired a 10 percent stake in the Gwynt y Mor offshore wind farm from Germany’s RWE Innogy for $360 million. That project is the largest offshore wind farm under construction in Europe, with more than 500 MW of installed capacity.
