Obama calls on federal government to move to 20% renewables by 2020

On December 5th, 2013 U.S. President Barack Obama signed a memorandum directing the nation’s federal government to meet 20% of its electricity demand with renewable energy sources by 2020, more than double the current level.

As a first step, agencies are required to source 10% of their electricity from renewables by 2015.

This move is the latest step in U.S. President Barack Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which was announced in June 2013. The increase in renewable energy goals was praised by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA, Washington D.C.).
