Crescent Dunes site visit announced for CSP Today USA in June

This week CSP Today have announced that attendees of CSP Today USA 2013 (26-27 June, Las Vegas) will be given a unique opportunity to visit SolarReserve’s Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project on 28 June, a 110MW molten salt power tower plant currently under construction near Tonopah, Nevada.

Crescent Dunes is expected to be completed and generating electricity in 2014, and has a 25-year power purchase agreement with NV Energy to sell 100 percent of the electricity generated. Delegates of CSP Today USA will have the unique opportunity to tour the ground-breaking plant, which is the first commercial scale solar power tower plant in the United States that uses molten salt as a primary heat transfer fluid for both heat capture and energy storage. When completed, Crescent Dunes will be the world’s largest molten salt power tower facility with integrated energy storage.

Jack Ahearne, the organizer of CSP Today USA, announced the news on Friday 24 May. Ahearne explained that “Crescent Dunes is unique in the US through its utilization of integrated energy storage, allowing for up to ten hours of thermal energy storage capable of delivering electricity at any time, day or night, which provides operating stability for the electricity grid”. He concluded, “we are delighted to give CSP Today USA attendees the chance to tour the plant and see the 640-foot solar power tower and solar field up close”.

Once operational, Crescent Dunes will supply approximately 500,000 megawatt hours annually of clean, renewable electricity, enough to power 75,000 homes during peak electricity periods. Furthermore, the project has created approximately 4,300 direct, indirect and induced jobs, with more than 600 construction workers currently on site.

SolarReserve, developers of the 110MW plant, will take attendees on an exclusive tour of the facility, including the solar field, power block and the heliostat assembly building at the site.
