Nordex delivering first N117/2400 wind turbines in Latin America to Akuo Energy in Uruguay

Completion of 50 MW wind farm targeted for 4th quarter 2013.

Nordex USA, Inc. and Akuo Energy announced plans for construction of a new wind farm in the Florida district of southern Uruguay, about 100 km (65 miles) from the capital city of Montevideo.

The wind energy project will feature 21 Nordex N117/2400 2.4 MW wind turbines on 91 meter towers.

Nordex, a leading global manufacturer of utility scale wind turbines, will be responsible for delivery, installation and commissioning and for ongoing maintenance for a minimum of 10 years under a Premium Service Contract.

This project has already been considered in Nordex’ order intake in December 2012.

The two companies have collaborated in the past on successful projects in France.

Ralf Sigrist, President & CEO of Nordex USA, Inc., commented, “It is especially rewarding to extend our existing relationship with Akuo to a new country and a new continent. We are excited by the opportunities that Uruguay can offer as it fulfills its commitments to a renewable energy future. We know that our N117/2400, which is specifically designed for high yield in light wind regimes, will help to maximize the potential. The resulting net capacity factor for this site confirms how well-suited this turbine is for the prevailing conditions.”

The electricity produced by the project, enough to power 73,000 homes, will be deployed by Usinas y Trasmisiones Eléctricas (UTE), Uruguay’s state power company, under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Akuo Energy.

Juan Negro, CEO of Akuo Energy Uruguay noted, “This is an exciting time for Uruguay. We are happy to play a role as the country moves forward with its plans to diversify its energy matrix and incorporate wind energy as its primary source of renewable energy. We know from our past experiences with Nordex that our two companies together will deliver the quality and performance that UTE and the people of Uruguay demand. We’re pleased to be leading with the introduction of the Nordex N117/2400 in Latin America.”

As one of the technological leaders in multi-megawatt wind power systems, Nordex is benefiting from the trend in favour of large-scale turbines. The range comprises one of the world’s largest series-produced wind power systems (N90/2500, N100/2500, N117/2400). To date, over 2.100 turbines of this type have been installed around the world. This experience with multi-megawatt turbines gives Nordex a decisive lead over most of its competitors. Nordex has installed a total of around 5,200 turbines with an aggregate capacity of more than 8,100 MW all around the world. With exports accounting for more than 85 percent of its business, Nordex SE plays a key role in international high-growth regions. The Company has offices and subsidiaries in 22 countries around the world with a total global headcount of over 2,500 employees.

Akuo Energy is a private French producer of electricity from renewable energy. It develops, finances, builds and operates a range of electrical power plants. The group has a foothold in 10 countries: France, Uruguay, Poland, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Montenegro, Indonesia, Morocco and the United States. Akuo Energy has 39 electrical plants in operation for 340 MW and 2,800 MW under development.
