The consortium formed by Acwa Power International (Acwa Power), Aries Ingeniería y Sistemas (Aries) and TSK Energía y Plantas Industriales (TSK), has been preferred bidder with the first phase of the 500 MW solar project in Morocco.
The Ouarzazate Phase 1 Project, a 160MW CSP plant to be built in the area of Ouarzazate, is the first step of the ambitious Moroccan Solar Plan targeting the construction of 2,000 MW by 2020.
The solar thermal project has been implemented through a competitive tender process for Independent Power Producers, which includes the design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the Solar Plant. In the bidding process 4 consortia were prequalified, thus Acwa Power, Aries and TSK offered the most competitive price for the final sale of electricity.
Aries will be the owner’s engineering for the entire project. Ouarzazate will be the first stand-alone CSP project in North Africa, as well as, the first CSP project assigned by means of a competitive tender process.
It is an important milestone for the sector worldwide and especially for the renewable energy industry in this region. The innovative solar policies in Morocco have created a favorable regulatory framework for investing in clean energies, hence the completion of this project marks a milestone for Aries in North Africa, seeing as this will be the regions first CSP stand-alone large-scale solar project.
Javier Rojas, President of Aries Ingeniería y Sistemas said, “Aries Ingeniería y Sistemas is really proud of being part of this huge step for CSP sector and to contribute to a competitive future and realistic energetic price policy in the country.” Aries continues to be active in other key solar markets with ongoing projects in Spain, USA, China, South East Asia and the Middle East.
