Wind power in Angola: first wind farm

Angola will have its first wind farm, one of the biggest in Africa, with an installed capacity of 100 megawatts, Angolan energy and water minister, João Baptista Borges said Wednesday in Luanda.

The minister noted that after it is concluded and in operation the wind farm would also have a centre for training and experimenting new technology, according to Angolan news agency Angop.

According to Borges, Angola has an estimated production potential of 18,000 megawatts of which just 5 percent are currently being used.

“We have a large amount of potential that has yet to be explored, which will make it possible to meet both domestic and industrial consumer demand,” said the minister adding that the government programme has set a target of 5,000 megawatts of production by 2016.
