Wind energy in Angola: construction of country’s first wind farm

The minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, announced last Tuesday in Luanda the construction of the country’s first wind power park, in Tombua region, which is to be one of the biggest in Africa.

According to the minister the mentioned wind farm, which might produce 100 megawatts of power, will also have facilities for training and experimentation with new technologies.

João Baptista Borges explained that in regard to the national power supply system, the authorities have been working to bring about the necessary stability, mainly in the main urban centres, as well as improve the production capacity with the installation of new power stations and rehabilitation of the distribution systems.

“We still have a big potential to be explored which will enable to cater for the needs, not just in the domain of consumption but also in industrial production, thus, the programme of the government outlines this principle and objective, which is to install by 2016 a 5000-megawatt capacity”, he explained.
