Sumitomo Electric unveils solar power generator for factories

Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd. unveiled Tuesday a power generation system for factories that combines solar cells twice as efficient as conventional ones and a large battery charger.

The electronic device maker is envisaging sales of the power system to factories and shopping malls for saving electricity and securing a stable power supply from sometime in fiscal 2013 through March 2014.

The system combining 15 of the so-called concentrated solar power units that gather sunlight into a small area boasts a maximum total output of 100 kilowatts. It was shown to the media at the electronic device maker’s Yokohama Works. A trial run is scheduled to begin later in the day.
