Substantial storage for Bokpoort Concentrating Solar Power project in South Africa

The final 50 MW of the 200 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) allocation according to South Africa’s current renewable energy independent procurement programme was awarded to a joint venture between Saudi Arabian developer of power and water projects, ACWA Power International, and South African developer Solafrica.

The Bokpoort Concentrating Solar Power project has selected parabolic trough technology, though this plant will feature substantial solar thermal storage significantly larger than that of similar trough plants. The project has opted for a two-tank molten salt storage system which is regarded as the most bankable option.

A subsidiary of ACWA Power will undertake the operations and maintenance of the Bokpoort solar thermal project.
