The wind turbines will add 100 megawatts of wind energy to the province’s power grid, helping to reduce Ontario’s long-standing reliance on fossil fuels.

While Long Yuan is known as the largest wind power developer in China, this marks the company’s first venture outside of China.

The Dufferin Wind Farm will feature 31 of manufacturing giant GE’s 1.6-100 model 1.5 megawatt wind turbines and 18 of its 2.75-103 model 2.5 megawatt wind turbines. The Dufferin wind farm will be the first wind farm in Ontario to feature the 1.6-100 wind turbines, the most efficient in their class, bringing in 19 per cent more energy per year than similar models.

The farm falls under the auspices of Ontario’s Green Energy Act, which seeks to grow the green energy business in the province to help reduce emissions and create green jobs. Under the act, Long Yuan will have to build the turbines with at least 50 per cent local content.
