Egypt: Younis – New Plan to Generate 3,500 Megawatts of Solar Energy Begins

Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis said that the electricity sector has started setting up the first Egyptian solar power plan with photovoltaic and concentrating solar power that lasts till 2027 given the country’s huge solar energy sources and long sunshine hours throughout the day.

In statements on Tuesday 22/5/2012, Younis said that solar energy has many positive aspects in terms of environment protection, lower greenhouse effects and more protection of natural resources.

The Egyptian solar energy plan is part of the electricity sector’s strategy for supporting and spreading renewable energy usage, he added. The plan aims at generating solar energy of some 3,500 megawatts that will save around 3 million tons of oil, he said.
