Solar power and geothermal energy hybrid plant in Nevada enters operations

The project is one of the first solar energy and geothermal power projects in the world. The Stillwater project has a combined capacity of 59 MW. It combines the continuous generation capacity of a binary cycle geothermal power plant with the peaking capacity of solar. NV Energy (NYSE: NVE) signed a long-term power purchase agreement to buy all of the output from the plant.

The plant uses 89,000 polycrystalline photovoltaic (PV) panels that are adjacent to the existing Stillwater geothermal plant, which was commissioned in 2009.
