Bechtel Awarded EPC Contract for New Solar Energy Project

Bechtel has been awarded a contract by enXco, an EDF Energies Nouvelles Company, for the engineering, procurement, and construction of the Catalina Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Generating Project in Kern County in Southern California. Bechtel will also build the 7.2 mile transmission line to connect the solar power facility to a nearby substation.

The 110 MWac facility will be built on 1,100 acres and produce enough solar energy to power approximately 35,000 homes.

‘This large utility-scale project will help meet the growing demand for a mix of renewable energy sources,’ said Jim Ivany, president of Bechtel’s Renewable Power business group. ‘This project draws upon Bechtel’s experience in both the renewable energy and transmission markets, and we look forward to working with enXco to make it a success.’

Construction is scheduled to begin in May pending final approval from the California Public Utilities Commission, with scheduled completion in 2013.

Bechtel is a leader in the renewable power industry. In addition to its work on the Catalina Solar Power Project, the company is building two other solar facilities in California: Ivanpah, which is the largest concentrated solar thermal power facility ever undertaken, and the California Valley Solar Ranch, one of the largest PV facilities currently under construction in the world.
