Chile discusses the use of lithium for electric vehicles

Chile’s decision to allow private companies to extract lithium has led to the opening of a debate on the formula of exploitation of a mineral for which global demand has tripled in the last 10 years.

On 27 March the Executive Sebastian Pinera administratively approved the implementation of the Special Operating Contracts Lithium (Ceol), a decree authorizing local and foreign companies to obtain 100,000 tonnes of coal in the next 20 years. By this concession, Chile plans to raise $ 350 million.
