Wind energy contribution rises in New Zealand

The proportion of renewable energy sources in New Zealand’s total electricity generation last year rose to 77 percent, up from 74 percent in 2010, the government announced Tuesday.

Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley said the figures showed a positive step towards the government’s goal of 90 percent renewable generation by 2025.

Wind power generation increased to 4.5 percent total generation last year and geothermal generation was up to 13.4 percent.

"The development of renewables is a key part of the government’ s strategy for developing a diverse energy portfolio that balances economic and environmental goals for the country," said Heatley in a statement.

"Increasing renewable generation contributed to a 5 percent drop in annual greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation," he said.
