Abengoa, JGC start operations of Concentrated Solar Power plant in Spain

Abengoa and JGC bring the second Concentrating Solar Power plant at the El Carpio Solar Complex. With this concentrated solar thermal power plant entering coming online, Abengoa reaches 543 MW of solar thermal in operation.

Abengoa (MCE: ABG), the international company that applies innovative technology solutions for sustainable development in the energy and environmental sectors, and the JGC Corporation, have brought their second joint concentrating solar power plant, Solacor 2 located at the El Carpio Solar Complex, online. Abengoa will operate the two solar energy plants that make up the El Carpio Solar Complex and will maintain a 74 percent holding in both projects.

With this solar energy plant, Abengoa reaches 543 megawatts in commercial operation, in addition to the 960 megawatts currently under construction and the hundreds of megawatts in promotion in different geographic regions.

The solar energy plant has a total of 60,500 mirrors installed in its solar field of over 110 hectares that concentrate the sunlight to generate temperatures upwards of 400 degrees Celcius. The new 50 megawatt solar plant, Solacor 2, will produce clean energy that is equivalent to that needed to power approximately 26,000 homes and will prevent about 31,400 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere each year.
