A global database for renewable energy resources

A useful tool also to disseminate national best practices at a global level. In 2011 a new record was set regarding investments in green energy: about 260 billion dollars in renewable sources, with a 5% increase compared with 2010.

As regards the perspectives of green sources in 2012, forecasts based on historic data predict that investments will still increase significantly. Moreover, their development is supported in Europe by the present Danish Presidency, as well as at an international level by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki moon.

In such a scenario of growth and trust, the partnership between the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was renewed with the creation of the IEA/IRENA Global Renewable Energy Policies and Measures Database, which will include IEA’s existing database and data collected by IRENA.

The two organizations therefore continue to cooperate by developing a joint system of statistics regarding renewable sources. A common database on policies in the field of renewable energy will be a tool allowing to understand what lies beneath the decisions that influence renewable generation.

This database will ensure the coverage of renewable energy policies in 150 countries, and will be employed for the promotion of best practices at a global level.
