Solar energy, geothermal energy and wind power in India grows to 2.14%

Solar power, geothermal energy and wind energy share of electricity generated in India grows to 2.14%. During the last three years, electricity generated from wind energy and solar power projects in India is estimated at about 50.3 billion kilowatt hours (kWh), India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) reports in a press release.

This corresponds to about 2.14% of the total electricity production of 2346 billion kWh during this period. No geothermal power project has been set up in the country, MNRE notes.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has stepped up Research & Development efforts in all renewable energy technologies especially in solar energy. These efforts are proposed to be further strengthened during the 12th Plan, by substantially enhancing R&D outlay and developing Centre of Excellence for advanced research. This information was given by the Minister of New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on November 28th, 2011.
