GlobalSpec Solar Energy Online Trade Show and Event Draws 2,800 Attendees

The “Solar Energy” online trade show and event hosted by GlobalSpec on October 26, 2011 drew more than 2,800 participants, with 80 percent of attendees reporting they are decision makers within their organizations. The free virtual conference is now available on demand to give engineers easy access to educational presentations and industry-leading supplier resources from the live-day event.

GlobalSpec’s “Solar Energy” event provided educational forums, manufacturer and supplier content, and expertise on the latest technology trends impacting the engineering marketplace. Participants explored the latest developments in photovoltaic and solar thermal systems and learned about concentrating solar power and new applications for passive solar.

“Our Solar Energy online trade show and event was a great demonstration of the value the technical and industrial communities see in the content GlobalSpec offers and the quality of our educational sessions,” said Donna Lewis, vice president of e-publishing and e-events for GlobalSpec. “Drawing nearly 3,000 participants to our Solar Energy event, with 80 percent confirming they are decision makers, indicates that this is a topic that resonated among key manufacturing professionals. The cutting-edge educational content and top exhibitors featured at Solar Energy made this a ‘must-attend’ event for industry leaders.”

Speakers and topics at the event included:

Keynote: Solar Power’s Sunny Forecast- Solar power markets were not immune to the challenges of the recent recession. However, markets continued to grow and are expected to flourish in the coming years. This presentation discussed the solar PV market’s potential and the factors that affect growth, such as customer demand, production capacity, silicon prices, and more.

Presented by Roberta Gamble, Business Unit Leader, Frost & Sullivan

EPC in CSP: Capturing the Sun – Solar Energy has moved beyond the emerging technology phase to become a utility-scale solution for clean, renewable energy. Specifically, Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) has helped to lead the clean energy revolution by proving its capability for utility-scale solar production. Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors face unique challenges when designing and building CSP plants and must focus on innovative engineering processes, cutting-edge construction workflows and industry-leading project management techniques to complete these mega-projects on time and on budget.
Presented by Clint Rosenbaum, Vice President of Engineering,

Lauren Engineers & Constructors, Inc.

Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) Technology: Refractive Primary Optics Based on All-Glass Lens – With concentrating photovoltaic (CPV) systems now being installed throughout the world in megawatt scale, and poised to grow to gigawatt scale in the next several years, this presentation discussed how a unique module design using all-glass lens primary optics can serve as a critical enabler for a truly reliable CPV system.

Presented by Dr. Hojun Yoon, Director of Solar Cell Technology, Solergy, Inc.

Harvesting Solar Energy from Asphalt Pavement – Pavements receive solar energy from the sun’s rays during the day, storing much of it as heat that is left to dissipate after sundown. The concept of harvesting solar energy from asphalt pavement is enticing because it offers a way to collect solar energy by utilizing an extensive infrastructure that already exists. Thus, there is a need to investigate methods for solar energy harvesting with a potential for economic benefit substantially beyond that of current technology.
Presented by Dr. K. Wayne Lee, Professor and RITRC Director, University of Rhode Island
