Wind energy in Guatemala – Getting ready to develop their wind power resources

At least 10 of 16 monitored areas have a high potential for generating electricity by wind turbines according to the results from the installation of wind measurement towers, The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported. Most of the potential wind farm sites are in Villa de Canales, Sololá, San Marcos and Jutiapa amoung others.

There are some wind farm projects with feasibility studies and licenses granted, getting ready to start funding and construction phases. The country is planning a public international bid for 800 MW.

The wind power potential in Guatemala is estimated at 7,800 MW, still unused. Perhaps this offer will impulse the Central American country to enter into the wind energy, like Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras.
