Alstom selected for Nevada concentrated solar thermal power plant

Alstom signed a contract with U.S. firm Cobra Thermosolar Plants Inc. to supply a 125 MW steam turbine and a generator for a Concentrating Solar Power plant in Tonopah, Nevada using tower technology.

The steam turbine will be delivered in September 2012 and the Concentrating Solar Thermal Power plant will be commissioned by the end of 2013.

Solar thermal electric energy generation concentrates the light from the sun to create heat. The concentrated heat is then used to produce steam that is to power the turbines of a conventional power plant.

The concentrated solar energy project is the application of an innovative solar energy storage technology and will produce 500,000 MWh per year to be sold to NV Energy. It represents the equivalent of powering 43,000 homes during peak operation periods.
