Genesis applies for huge wind farm with 286 wind turbines in New Zealand

The proposed wind farm in North Wairarapa, between Masterton and Tararua, would have up to 286 wind turbines and generate enough wind power for 370,000 homes.

The wind farm could cost up to $1 billion and would be built over about 3000 hectares across 29 farmers’ properties. Genesis Energy public affairs manager Richard Gordon says it has taken about a year to reach agreement with the farmers.

However, the proposal is not certain to go ahead even with resource consent from the four councils involved; the Manawatu-Wangauni and Greater Wellington regional councils and the Masterton and Tararua district councils.

Mr Gordon says about 40 neighbouring properties would be able to see the wind turbines. The documents are now open for public submissions.
