Enel Green Power receives three wind farm contracts in Brazil

Enel Green Power has been awarded three wind farm projects located in the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco and Bahia. These wind power projects are located in the Northeast of Brazil in the States of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, the latter in consortium with Endesa. Commercial operations of these wind turbines projects are expected by 2014

By executing these projects, Enel Green Power’s 90 MW of wind projects will be added to 193 MW of power apart from the 93 MW hydro power plant operating in Brazil. Through its participation in the auction, the company strengthens its presence in Latin America. Enel Green Power has won three high efficiency wind farm projects at an auction conducted by Brazil. The wind farms are to be installed at three Brazilian states namely Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte.

The power generated by the three wind farms put together is 770 GWh per year, this power is sufficient to supply power to as many as 500,000 houses in Brazil. These farms help Brazil in addressing its ever rising demand for power, which grows at the rate of 5% every year. The capacity of these wind farms is impressive which covers 45% of the power generation, roughly 4,000 hours every year. At the auction Enel Green was awarded the right to sell specific energy volumes generated at the wind farms to a consortium of regulated distribution companies, having power supply contracts up to 20 years.

The additional volumes of energy generated will be sold to the liberalised market according to the pre-established long term commitments. The total investment for all the three projects is around € 330 million. The general manager and CEO of Enel Green commented that this was a significant step towards their strategy in delivering high efficiency projects to fast paced markets such as Brazil. He added that Enel Group will be working along with the Endesa Group by bringing their technological skills to the fore and exploiting their relationship for mutual benefit. It is a noteworthy point that Brazil is amongst the top countries worldwide providing clean power with as much as 92,000 MW of power generated through clean technology.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company devoted to the development and management of power generation from renewable sources at the international level, with a presence in Europe and the Americas. It is among the industry leaders worldwide thanks to its approximately 22 billion KWh generated from a well balanced energy mix inclusive of water, sun, wind and geothermal sources.

This is enough to meet the energy needs of about 8 million households and avoid the emission of more than 16 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The company’s installed capacity exceeds 6,100 MW, produced by more than 620 plants in operation around the world, with a generation mix that includes wind power, solar power, hydro, geothermal energy and biomass.
