Plugless Power Wireless Electric Vehicles Charging Technology Featured on Chevrolet Volt

EvatranTM, manufacturer of the first wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EV), today opened Plug-In 2011 by showcasing a 2011 Chevrolet Volt set up to charge wirelessly with a Plugless PowerTM station. The Volt is the first electric car model to be outfitted with the aftermarket system that provides hands-free charging convenience for EV owners.

“As consumers become more receptive to green transportation options, our goal is to make it easier than ever to maintain electric vehicles. In fact, it’s as easy as parking in the garage.”

Plugless Power will be available initially to strategic partners with Chevrolet Volt models in their EV fleets including corporations, municipal governments, utilities and small businesses. Evatran is actively seeking corporate partners for retrofit installations in late 2011 and early 2012. In addition to aftermarket systems, Evatran and its partner, Yazaki North America, are working with automotive manufacturers to integrate Plugless Power technology directly into mass-market electric cars.

Plugless Power offers EV drivers an easier way to charge vehicles. Using a dual-component system based on inductive power transfer – the same technology used to charge common household devices such as electric toothbrushes – Plugless Power streamlines the battery charging process for electric vehicles and extended-range hybrids. Compared to wired solutions, the benefits of wireless technology include:

Greater convenience – saves time by eliminating the need to plug-in car
Ease of use – avoids the need to manage bulky cables and plugs
Hassle free – protects against forgetting to recharge
Flexible – allows for plug-in charging, as needed
Increased safety – eliminates need to handle high-power charging cords

“Plugless Power’s wireless charging capabilities provide a hassle-free option for EV drivers to manage their recharging needs,” said Rebecca Hough, chief operating officer for Plugless Power. “As consumers become more receptive to green transportation options, our goal is to make it easier than ever to maintain electric vehicles. In fact, it’s as easy as parking in the garage.”

Aftermarket installation of the Plugless Power system is completed by a certified installation partner. The straightforward and simple process involves:

Vehicle Adapter Integration: A wireless charging adapter and small electronic module are mounted onto the vehicle, adding less than 10 pounds to the overall weight. These components are connected directly into the vehicle’s existing onboard battery charger.
Station Installation: Charging station setup includes installing a weatherproof parking pad at the vehicle’s primary parking location and a wall-mounted power module connected to a 240-volt line.

Plugless Power, manufactured by Evatran, is the first electric vehicle (EV) charging system on the market to offer consumers a simple way to charge their EVs with the ease of hands-free technology. Utilizing inductive technology, which has been used in electrical transformers for more than 100 years, Plugless Power streamlines the charging of electric vehicles and extended range hybrids by eliminating the nuisance of the cord and plug.
