Feasibility of Automotive Battery Recycling Industry

The Technology Strategy Board, Britain’s national agency for business-led technology studies, granted six local companies almost £500,000 ($804,200) in total to conduct seven feasibility studies on different aspects of the recycling and re-use of batteries for low and ultra-low carbon vehicles.

The studies will look into ways to maximize battery life, enable cost-effective recycling, and address concerns on the sustainable re-use and recovery of raw materials from automotive batteries, explained the board’s head of transport, Andrew Everett.

Results of the feasibility studies are expected to help identify commercial opportunities and establish an automotive battery recycling industry in Britain.

Independent transport consulting group Transport Research Laboratory will carry out two feasibility studies to be funded by the Technology Strategy Board. These will be on re-using electric vehicle batteries for electricity storage in the utilities sector and the recycling of tracked electric vehicle Li-ion batteries.
