Solar power in Egipt improving electricity generation

The World Bank and Egyptian companies cooperate on improving the use of renewable energy. The procedures aim at implementing a strategy of electricity sector for the production of 7200 megawatts by 2020.

Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younis said that the funding of power stations in North Giza, Banha and Suez has been finalized at costs amounting to around EGP 18.3 billion through loans from Arab and international financial corporations and electricity companies.

The electricity sector will complete the funding of the rest of stations in the 2012/2017 plan, Younis said in statements. Younis added that the ministry plans to feed Egypt’s national electricity grid with an additional electric power of 1,500 megawatts by the end of this month to face extra loads expected in the summer.

In statements early this month, Younis said the experimental operation of the power plants of El-Shabab and Damietta started Thursday. El-Shabab, which will produce 100 megawatts, will be operational late June, added Younis.
