Vestas receives 31 MW wind turbines order for Tamil Nadu

Vestas has received a wind power order for 17 units of the V100-1.8 MW wind turbine for the Eppodum Venran Wind Farm project in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The order has been placed by Beta Wind Farm Pvt. Ltd, which is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Orient Green Power Company Limited (OGPL). OGPL currently operates 152.6 MW of wind power and is planning to add another 300 MW in 2011. This 31 MW wind farm in Tamil Nadu is Orient’s second project with Vestas. Last year, Vestas received its first order from Orient for the Vellappaneri Wind Farm project, also located in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

The contract comprises supply and commissioning of the turbines, a VestasOnline® Business SCADA system as well as a 10-year service and maintenance agreement. Delivery is scheduled to start during the fourth quarter of 2011, and the project will be completed during the first quarter of 2012.

“We are delighted to receive this order from Orient Green for our new V100-1.8 MW turbine designed for Indian wind conditions,” says Sean Sutton, President of Vestas Asia Pacific.

Rajiv Wahi, Executive Chairman of Vestas India adds, “This second order from Orient Green within a short period of time shows their trust in Vestas’ products and capabilities. We would like to acknowledge Orient Green’s ambition in developing renewable energy solutions for India and we are pleased to support their efforts.”

“OGPL is pleased to be associating with Vestas India for adding capacity to our wind farm portfolio. With V82-1.65 MW wind turbines from Vestas already under commissioning in Kudangulam, the additional order has been given for these 31 MW to be installed in Eppodhum Vendran, Tamil Nadu with V100-1.8 MW wind turbines. We are sure Vestas will add value through its quality of service and excellence in on-time project execution and I wish them every success in introducing the V100-1.8 MW turbine in India,” comments Mr T Shivaraman, Vice Chairman and Executive Director of Orient Green Power Company Limited.

The V100-1.8 MW wind turbine is designed for high energy production from low wind sites like those in India, with a greater rotor diameter that enables maximum output at low wind speeds. Designed, tested and manufactured for quality, the V100-1.8 MW makes even the lowest wind speed sites commercially viable. When completed, the Eppodum Venran wind power plant will save the environment from almost 85,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, compared to the Indian electricity generation mix.
