Construction of a 200 MW wind farm in Kansas

The wind farm is expected to supply power to about 70,000 households, avoiding the emission of over 580,000 tons of CO2 per year. Enel Green Power North America, Inc.’s (EGP NA) Caney River Wind Project (Caney) starts construction activities at its location in Elk County, Kansas. Caney was developed by EGP NA’s development partner Trade Wind Energy and has a power purchase agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The new wind farm will consist of 111 Vestas wind turbines V-90 – 1.8 MW, for a total installed capacity of approximately 200 MW. Once fully operational, the wind farm will generate 765 million kWh annually, supplying power to approximately 70,000 households, and will avoid the atmospheric emission of over 580,000 tons of CO2 a year. The overall investment in this project amounts to approximately 350 million US dollars.

Caney River Wind Project committed funding for a Native Environment Conservation Plan focused on the Tallgrass Prairie in Kansas. The money is expected to fund the purchase of conservation easements for over 18,000 acres, the restoration of 6,000 acres of Tall Grass Prairie Habitat and wind and wildlife research focused on this eco-region.

“North America has a great renewable potential and I am pleased to see further development of our wind capacity in the state of Kansas bringing clean energy production and environmentally driven conservation and research to work hand in hand.” commented Francesco Starace, Chief Executive Officer of Enel Green Power.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company dedicated to the development and management of power generation from renewable resources around the world, with a presence in Europe, North America and Latin America. It is an industry leader worldwide thanks to some 22 billion kilowatt hours generated from water, sun, wind and geothermal, meeting the energy needs of some 8 million households and avoiding 16 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The company has an installed capacity of more than 6,100 MW, with over 620 facilities around the world and a generation mix that includes wind energy, solar power, hydro, geothermal energy and biomass.

Enel Green Power North America, Inc. (f/k/a Enel North America, Inc.), part of Enel Green Power, is a leading owner and operator of renewable energy plants in North America with projects operating and under development in 20 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. EGP-NA owns and operates over 70 plants with an installed capacity of around 800 MW powered by renewable hydropower, wind energy, geothermal energy and biomass energy. The company is operating currently wind turbines projects in four US states (New York, Minnesota, Kansas, and Texas) and one Canadian province (Newfoundland and Labrador).
