China automakers to get subsidies for electric vehicles

Electric vehicles include electric buses and cleaning autos. There are two models for electric cars with lithium ion batteries. One is the Midi made by Foton. The other is based on a SAAB model and is made by Beijing Automobile Works. An electric passenger car consumes less than 7 yuan worth of electricity for one hundred kilometers.

The official, Zhang Jihong, said that the government hopes that sales of electric cars could reach 6,000 units in 2011.

Subsidies vary among models. A maximum of 60,000 yuan per unit is available from the central public budget and another 60,000 yuan can be granted from the local government. Hybrid-powered vehicles can get 100,000 yuan for each unit of sale. The subsidy will go to automakers rather than individual buyers.
