With the recent growth in Electric Motor technology development and innovation comes a new strategic focus: Some automakers have decided to design, develop, and produce their traction motors in house, rather than purchase off-the-shelf machines from specialist suppliers. Off-the-shelf motors, no matter how extensively they are adapted for a specific application, can compromise the efficiencies of the propulsion system.
The fact that the OEMs are starting their own design, development and manufacturing has a considerable impact on the supply chain. A panel, including representatives from GM, Daimler, Volkswagen and Chrysler and major suppliers will discuss how OEMs will need to start new supplier relationships for products which they have not purchased directly before. These products include wire, steel, epoxy, sensors and so on. This means that these new suppliers (and the OEMs) will need to create specifications for certification and qualification.
Technical issues will be addressed, as well as market growth projections, requirements and cost structures for the permanent magnet motor, the induction motor and the switch reluctance motor.
