PowerWind builds first wind farm in Azerbaijan

The installation of all four wind turbines with a rated capacity of 900 kilowatts each will be completed in October. Thus PowerWind is among the first wind power manufacturers that are represented in the oil state on the Caspian Sea.

Customer and operator of the wind farm in Sitalcaj, about 40 kilometres from Baku, is the industrial enterprise Trans TS MMC. The extension of the wind farm to a total of eleven wind turbines of the type PowerWind 56 is already being planned.

"Our PowerWind 56 is ideal for new wind energy markets. We are proud to be able to be one of the first manufacturers to erect wind turbines in Azerbaijan", says Stefan Heczko, managing director of PowerWind GmbH.

The compact design of the PowerWind 56 allows for individual transportation concepts optimally tailored to each project. For the logistically very demanding route to Azerbaijan of more than 5000 kilometres, the combination of truck and train transportation proved to be the best solution.

The great advantages of the PowerWind 56 wind turbines are their compact size, easy transportability and encapsulation against weather conditions. The machine houses arrived on-site just three weeks after their departure from the PowerWind production in Bremerhaven.

Because of the depth and international experience of PowerWind’s own logistics experts, the transportation routes and costs could be optimised.

The oil state of Azerbaijan is investing more and more into wind energy: With only two wind turbines installed at the outset of 2010, more than 250 megawatts of wind power capacity are currently in the planning. The government has announced to expand the share of renewable energies by three to five percent within the next few years.

Solar and wind energy will be used primarily in sparsely populated areas in which, due to a lack of high voltage power lines, no conventional power plant capacities can be built.

PowerWind GmbH is a German company that produces wind turbines with rated outputs of 900 kW and 2500 kW and which also supplies services specifically related to these products. This dynamically expanding company was founded in 2007 and is financed by Warburg Pincus, an international investor.

PowerWind GmbH has two locations in Germany, one in Hamburg, one in Bremerhaven. The 900 kW PowerWind 56 wind turbine has been in series production since January 2008 at the state-of-the-art factory in Bremerhaven. The first 2.5 MW wind turbine of type PowerWind 90 will be built by the end of 2010.
