Project management for offshore wind power plants

Around 30 offshore wind energy plants are now already installed worldwide and there are many additional wind farm projects being planned around the globe.

In total, a further 30 GW will be installed offshore in the near future. A reliable wind turbines project management solution is key to deliver an offshore wind farm development within the constraints of time, cost, and performance requirements.

Project management of an offshore wind farm covers a wide range of disciplines, such as interface and risk management, cost monitoring and control, document control, programme management, health and safety issues, personnel movements and vessel co-ordination, managing the various work packages and general co-ordination of all aspects of the project.

With the completion of the largest offshore wind farm in the world – Vattenfall’s Thanet Offshore Wind Farm in the UK – GL Noble Denton / GL Garrad Hassan has now finished its largest project management contract to date.

The consulting company provided complete project management services on both a technical and commercial level for the development of Thanet. The project team worked on the assignment from concept to completion providing consultancy services, the overall project management role, provision of foundation installation management services as well as undertaking the marine warranty surveyor’s role.

In addition to the project management role, GL Noble Denton / GL Garrad Hassan also undertook a number of engineering and consultancy tasks on the project which included a FEED study, inputs to the environmental impact assessment and consenting process as well as ensuring the highest energy yield and lowest social and environmental impacts for the project.

GL Noble Denton / GL Garrad Hassan continue to be involved with the Thanet project as the final commissioning and testing works are completed.
