Lithium-Air Battery Technology to Be Addressed at 6th Lithium Mobile Power Conference

Dr. Steven Visco, Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of PolyPlus Battery Company, will present on the latest developments in lithium-air battery technology at the 6th Lithium Mobile Power conference to be held in Boston, MA from November 3-5, 2010. Lithium-air batteries are capable of extremely high energy densities, far greater than traditional lithium-ion batteries, potentially even rivaling the energy density of petroleum.

The Knowledge Foundation has announced that Dr.

Dr. Visco will address the various approaches to the development of rechargeable lithium-air batteries and the benefits and drawbacks of each technology. In the 1990s PolyPlus invented the protected lithium electrode which enables the practical development of high energy density lithium/aqueous battery technologies, including primary and secondary lithium-air.

It also allows greater flexibility in the development of rechargeable non-aqueous lithium-air batteries in that a much larger selection of non-aqueous solvents and electrolytes can be used. Lithium-air chemistry can achieve extremely high energy densities, greater than 800 Wh/kg for 2 Ah lithium-air laboratory cells and 1300 Wh/kg for 13 Ah lithium-water battery packs.

Drawing upon ten years of tracking developments in lithium battery and fuel cell research, Lithium Mobile Power will guide delegates from technology and materials development, through device packaging and integration, to applications in a mobile power marketplace, and is conveniently timed with Battery Safety 2010. Program topics will include:

* Li-ion batteries for PHEV, HEV, and Electric Vehicles – issues and solutions
* Revolutionizing li-ion batteries for portable and consumer products
* Materials challenges – electrodes & electrolyte
* New electrolyte technologies for higher power and energy density
* Safety, testing, performance
