New wind farm in Jamaica

The construction of the wind energy plant comes as part of the electric utility’s fuel diversification effort, which will see a reduction in the company’s dependence on imported fuel.

The Jamaican government will be exploring 22 new wind energy sites, to add wind generated electricity to the existing Wigton Wind farm 1, and the soon to be completed US$49 million Wigton 2, in Southern Manchester.

The other three wind turbines will be erected during this month, while construction continues on the Power Plant’s substation. The wind farm, which is costing the utility approximately J$800m, will add 3 megawatts of wind power to the national grid.

President & CEO of JPS Damian Obiglio; vice-president of Generation Expansion Valentine Fagan; and manager of expansion projects, Alston Watson, discuss the ongoing work at the Munro Wind Power Plant.

Through an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) grant of over US$700,000, sites will be researched for their commercial viability and, if viable, they will be developed and used to offer cheaper energy production. The research process will be completed in 18 months.
