The REpower wind turbines, based on the proven technology of the 5 MW class, have a total capacity of approximately 295 megawatts.
"Woodward is proud to be selected as the converter supplier for some of the most powerful wind turbines in the world," said Gerhard Lauffer, President, Electrical Power Systems. "This wind energy agreement strengthens our relationship with REpower in the offshore market, where we believe there is significant potential for future global wind energy growth."
Woodward has supplied CONCYCLE® converters for REpower wind turbines for more than eight years; 5MW and 6MW turbine class converters since 2004. Recently, Woodward successfully commissioned power converters for the first German offshore wind farm, Alpha Ventus, which uses six REpower 5MW wind turbines.
Power converters are a critical component for delivering stable, high-quality power to the grid by controlling the voltage and power from the wind turbine generator, so voltage and frequency are constant and independent of the variable rotation speed of the wind turbine.
Woodward is an independent designer, manufacturer, and service provider of energy control and optimization solutions used in global infrastructure equipment. We serve the aerospace and defense, power generation and distribution, and transportation markets.
