Windstream Energy Wins 300MW Contract to Develop Canada?s First Offshore Wind Farm

Windstream Wolfe Island Shoals Inc., a subsidiary of Windstream Energy LLC, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Feed-in Tariff contract by the Ontario Power Authority to develop Canada’s first offshore wind farm site.

The 300 MW wind energy project is located west of Wolfe Island, Ontario on approximately 48,000 acres of shallow water shoals. Windstream Energy was also advised that its ten onshore wind power projects, totalling 745 MW, have been placed in the Economic Connection Test queue for future review. The first such test is scheduled for the August/September time frame.

Ian Baines, President of Windstream Energy commented, “We are extremely excited about the opportunity afforded to us by the government of Ontario and the Ontario Power Authority. The 300 MW offshore Wolfe Island site will create hundreds of jobs for the Province of Ontario and the local municipalities. Wolfe Island is one of the windiest areas of the province and has proven local support for wind development. Our project is close to the Lennox Thermal Station, and will offset the use of fossil fuels, by providing power generated by the abundant winds of Lake Ontario.”

Mr. Baines has strong ties to the area as a graduate of Queen’s University and as the founder of Canadian Renewable Energy Corporation, the original developer of the 200 MW Wolfe Island EcoPower® Centre, which is adjacent and down-wind from the Windstream site.

Upon learning that Windstream had been awarded a contract under the FIT program, Jim Vandenhoek, the Mayor of Frontenac Islands commented, “We are strong supporters of the Province’s efforts in renewable energy. The Wolfe Island community has benefitted from the last renewable project and we share the goals of all Ontarians when it comes to the development of these projects”.

Mark Bell, EVP of Windstream added “Offshore wind power has been growing at a tremendous rate in Europe because of the steady, reliable winds that occur off-shore. These advantages are now being recognized in North America and we are proud that Wolfe Island Shoals has been selected as the first offshore wind energy project in Canada”.

Windstream Energy is an independent wind development company with a portfolio of 2.5GW located in Ontario, B.C. and Wyoming. Windstream Energy Inc. is a seasoned developer of commercial wind power. We are based in Ontario and also operate in western Canada and the High Plains area of the western U.S. The company is privately owned and well funded by American investors in the energy industry.

We are building a portfolio of large-scale wind farms with a total capacity of over 3,000 megawatts. This geographically diverse portfolio will provide economic spinoffs for our financial partners, local communities and Canada’s First Nations and Native Americans. Our motto is “Creating a Cleaner Tomorrow”.

The time is right for Windstream Energy, as citizens and their governments are concerned about pollution and hazardous wastes from traditional power generation. Wind power is a clean, safe and renewable source of energy. Windstream Energy sees the economic and environmental benefits and supports governments across North America who are setting targets for the growth of wind power.
