Building the automotive and electric vehicle market for NuVinci(R) technology in China

Fallbrook Technologies Inc. (Fallbrook), a technology company dedicated to improving the performance and flexibility of transmissions for engine and human-powered devices, announced today that it will work with ASL Management Consulting Company (ASL) to spearhead Fallbrook’s automotive and electric vehicle business development efforts in China.

ASL, based in Shanghai, provides management and consulting services for both Chinese companies and foreign companies focused on China, and specializes in new technologies in the energy, environment and electronic sectors. ASL is an acronym for Advanced Strategic Management Leadership.

Under its agreement with Fallbrook, ASL will utilize a team of experienced professionals in China to conduct a detailed analysis of the Chinese electric vehicle market, help establish Fallbrook’s Chinese electric vehicle business, and provide brand and product support.

ASL’s chairman is Rudolph Schlais, former CEO of GM Asia Pacific and a 42-year veteran of General Motors, who led GM in establishing its successful China presence. ASL’s CEO, Dr. Xiaozhi Liu, previously served as GM China’s chief engineer and chief technology officer, as well as CEO of a number of prominent China enterprises.

"China is a strategically important market for Fallbrook – particularly in electric vehicles," said William G. Klehm III, Fallbrook’s chairman and CEO. "Having these two recognized and proven auto industry executives opening doors for us will accelerate our business development efforts significantly."

China, now the world’s second-largest consumer of oil, is focusing on electric vehicles as one way to reduce its oil dependence and address air quality and other environmental issues.

The NuVinci CVP continues to be recognized as a "clean" technology – designed to help electric vehicles run faster and farther, to make bicycles a better commuting alternative, and to enable wind turbines to extract more power from the wind, and as a continuously variable accessory drive (CVAD) which is designed to help front-end engine accessories (such as alternators, water pumps and air conditioner compressors) consume less energy.

"We are passionate and committed to the growth of NuVinci technology as an automotive-class solution," said Mr. Schlais. "We’ve already had significant interest from a large Chinese bus manufacturer for a NuVinci CVAD air conditioner compressor application."

"We’re very impressed with how the NuVinci CVP performs in everything from bikes and electric vehicles to wind turbines and CVADs," said Dr. Liu. "Together with Fallbrook, ASL will help NuVinci technology grow at ‘China speed’."

NuVinci technology is a practical, economical and universally adaptable continuously variable transmission for human- and motor-powered vehicles and machines.

The NuVinci CVP uses a set of rotating and tilting balls positioned between the input and output components of a transmission. Tilting the balls changes their contact diameters and varies the speed ratio. The NuVinci CVP can be used in a wide variety of transmission-based vehicles or devices.
