Suzlon bags 8.7 MW order from Larsen & Toubro group

The wind farm will comprise of three units of Suzlon`s S82- 1.5 mw turbines and two units of Suzlon S88 – 2.1 mw wind turbines generators, and is scheduled to be completed and commissioned by Mar.30, 2010.

Suzlon Energy Limited (SEL), the world’s third leading wind power and India’s largest wind turbine manufacturer, has won an order from L&T Infrastructure Development Projects Limited (L&TIDPL) a subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Ltd – one of India’s leading engineering companies – to set up, operate and maintain a 8.7 MW wind energy project.

This is the first order received by Suzlon from Larsen & Toubro group. The project will be set-up in Tamil Nadu for L&T Infrastructure Development Projects Limited, the infrastructure development arm of L&T. The wind power power generated from this project will be wheeled for captive use at L&T facilities in Tamil Nadu under an energy wheeling agreement with the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. The project is estimated to benefit L&T Group due to the savings in comparison with the prevailing commercial power tariffs in the state. Furthermore, carbon credits will keep the project viable.

K Venkatesh, Executive Vice President, L&T’s Developmental Projects Sector said: “We are a technology-driven company offering a wide range of advanced solutions, services and products with a very strong commitment towards sustainability. Our investment with Suzlon in wind energy is based on not just lowered cost of power, but also the environmental aspects – conserving resources and helping mitigate climate risks. Suzlon is the leader in the wind sector in India and offers us a close collaborative approach to the project and we look forward to a successful experience in this new project as the bedrock for future renewable investments.”

L&T is one of the largest engineering companies in the Indian private sector. It is a pioneer in the field of technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing. As a technology-driven engineering conglomerate, L&T’s capabilities cover large process plants, construction, electrical distribution, electronics and information technology amongst many others. L&T IDPL has significant presence in the transportation and urban infrastructure space in the country.

Speaking on the project I. C. Mangal, President – Business Development (India) for Suzlon Energy Limited, said: “L&T is one of India’s leading engineering conglomerates and we take great pride in this order and look forward to strengthening this relationship in the future. This order underlines Suzlon’s unique value proposition – offering expertise across the value chain from concept to commissioning of wind projects helping clients like L&T achieve energy security and mitigate carbon emissions, ultimately creating sustainable businesses.”

Suzlon’s Sankaneri wind farm in Tamil Nadu is amongst the largest wind park in the country with more than 700 MW already installed and further development under way. Tamil Nadu with its strong industrial base and support for renewable energy technologies has been a leading wind energy state in India. Suzlon’s total installed base across Tamil Nadu is more than 1,380 MW.
