Westar Energy signs agreement for new wind farm in Kansas

Westar has entered into an agreement with Infinity Wind Power to develop the Ironwood site near Spearville for up to 500 megawatts (MW) of wind energy.

The development agreement with Infinity is structured as an asset purchase and includes contracts with landowners as well as other development-related assets. Infinity will also assist in further preparing the site for construction of the wind farm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The company owns a 99 megawatt wind farm near Leoti, has a 100 megawatt share in a farm near Nashville, Kan., and buys 96 megawatts from one near Concordia.

The first phase of approximately 200 MW will be completed by late 2011 or 2012, depending on the pace of new transmission construction in western Kansas, Westar said.
